The iconic Kentucky candy was created in 1919 by two substitute school teachers, Ruth Hanley Booe and Rebecca Gooch. At a time when women were rarely encouraged to start or grow businesses, they faced both skepticism and challenges—especially since neither founder even had the right to vote until 1920. Driven by creativity and determination, the two women personally introduced their new confection by stopping people on the street and sharing its story. Their passion paid off over time, and the company grew into a lasting success. Today, it remains family-owned by Ruth Booe’s fourth generation, continuing the same commitment to quality that inspired the original creation.
