Produced in over 12,000 units across six primary variants, employed by various air forces until the 1970s, and notably a symbol of the Pacific War and a TV screen star, the Chance Vought F4U Corsair is undoubtedly one of aviation's most renowned aircraft. Instantly recognizable by its 'seagull' wing configuration, dictated by its large-diameter propeller, the Corsair, despite a rocky start, became a key player in the American naval air force's success during World War II, earning its 'whistling death' nickname due to the noise generated by its engine and wings during attacks. Lacking a suitable replacement, it bravely served again in the Korean War, completing nearly 80% of ground attack missions. While the U.S. was the primary user, the British Fleet Air Arm employed it from World War II, including in the European theater, and France used it in combat in Algeria and Suez until the early 1960s.
