The McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing) F/A-18 Hornet, a supersonic twin-engine all-weather night fighter and attack aircraft, first took flight in November 1978, with the first production flight occurring on April 12, 1980. Initially, 380 F/A-18As were produced, and in September 1987, production shifted to the F/A-18C. Variants A and C are single-seaters, while B and D feature tandem seats. The Hornet can operate from both aircraft carriers and land bases. The Swiss Air Force's Air14 Air Show, held at Payerne AB to commemorate 100 years of Swiss aviation, 50 years of the Patrouille Suisse, and 25 years of the PC-7 Team, saw F/A-18C Hornet J-5014, serial 1359/SFC014 from the 11th Flying Squadron, 13th Wing, sport a special paint scheme inspired by Swiss WWII aircraft. This event, held over the last weekend of August and the first weekend of September 2014, was Europe's largest air show that year.
